Job Title: Cook (Part Time)

Hours: Approximately 6 AM – 9 PM – Daytime, Evening shifts

Reports To: Chef/Director of Culinary Services

The Cook will work within the food services team to prepare and serve attractive and nutritious meals and snacks according to organizational standards. The cook is also expected to maintain a clean, sanitary and safe kitchen area at all times. Cooks must be mindful of budgetary guidelines in order to support the department efforts to adhere to food and labour budgets. The cook is also support to the serving staff, assisting with dishes and other preparation duties where required.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Assist with meal preparation and presentation paying special attention to menus, special dietary or nutritional restrictions, and numbers of portions to be served
  • Ensure safety and sanitation when handling, preparing and storing food
  • Clean & Sanitize all kitchen equipment and utensils, including floors, walls and food storage areas
  • Promote health and safety in the kitchen and workplace
  • Assist serving staff to clean and sanitize tableware between meals and with other preparation duties as required
  • Clean, cut, and cook meat, fish, or poultry, produce and other foods
  • Receive supply orders, store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Competencies & Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Previous experience in similar position or vocational training in food services an asset
  • Food Handlers Certification an asset
  • Experience using Rationale Technology an asset
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification required, or must be willing to obtain upon hire

  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent observational skills and ability to determine urgency or reportable incidents
  • Good judgment and ability to exercise discretion

  • Empathetic to and understanding of the specific needs of seniors
  • Must have a high degree of interpersonal skills which would enable the incumbent to deal successfully with emergency situations

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • A current and clear Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector Search
